Haemaccel is a plasma volume substitute. It is an intravascular colloid. It is used as a substitute to overcome the requirement of blood loss due to an accident, haemorrhage, burns, injury, etc.

Active Ingredient

The main or active ingredient in this infusion is polygeline. About 35g of polygeline is present in 1000ml infusion. Other ingredients present in this drip are sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride. It is also called a plasma volume expander.

Haemaccel infusion is a plasma substitute. It substitutes or replaces the plasma or fluid lost in the circulation.
It protects the patient from loss of electrolytes caused by the accident or trauma. Loss of electrolytes can cause nausea, dizziness or seizures, or dehydration.
It substitutes the blood and body fluid lost due to an accident, injury, or burns.
It can also be used as a substitute liquid for filling up the volume of circulating blood while undergoing surgery.

It is used in the prevention or treatment of Shock associated with reduction in effective circulating blood volume due to Hemorrhage, Loss of plasma (Burns, Peritonitis, Pancreatitis, Crush injuries), or Loss of water and electrolytes from persistent diarrhea.

Dosage

Haemaccel infusion is given to immobile patients while undergoing surgery. So, doctors know better when it is required.

It is contra-indicated in patients with a known Hypersensitivity to constituents of the preparation and/or patients with existing anaphylactoid reactions. Should be used with caution in an increased risk of histamine release (e.g. allergic persons and patients with a history of histamine response; also patients who in the previous 7 days have received a drug which releases histamine).In the latter cases, it may be given only after taking appropriate prophylactic steps.
